Celebrating National Nurses Week

Join us in celebrating by reading about these special nurses and their stories.

Lydia C.

"I became a nurse so I could care for people and have a great career with lots of opportunities."

How long have you been in the profession?

I have been a nurse for about a year and a half.

Do you specialize in a particular area of nursing? Why did you pick this specialty?

I work on the cardiac unit. I really enjoy the responsibility of caring for a patient with a higher acuity. When the heart is affected, it’s a full-body effect that requires a lot of knowledge.

How do you express your personal style at work when you essentially wear a uniform?

We are really lucky in that we can wear whatever scrubs we would like, but having some fun shoes helps, especially if they’re really comfortable.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love hiking, skiing, running, and generally spending time outside.

"It inspires me every day that there are people in the world who continue to work so hard for
others’ needs."

How long have you been in the profession?

I have been an RN for one year and eight months now.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part is the education component. I have recently taken up the role of preceptor, which is a teacher to the new nurses starting on our unit. I love when I get to teach a new skill, explain a body process or teach someone how to change a dressing.

What is the best part of your day?

The best part of my day is when I first arrive for my shift. At that point, I have already had a little bit of coffee and I feel fresh and ready to conquer the day!

How important is comfortable footwear in your job?

Wow. Comfortable footwear is absolutely essential as a nurse! Nursing is incredibly demanding on the body. Finding a shoe with enough support to cushion the compression on your back and is comfortable enough to last you twelve hours straight is a constant struggle.

"If I did not become a nurse, I honestly don’t know what else I would do!"

How long have you been in the profession?

I have worked as a nurse in Nashville and Denver for the past seven years.

Do you specialize in a particular area of nursing? Why did you pick this specialty?

I specialize in cancer research, specifically for adult leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma patients. I picked this specialty because it is a great patient population to work with. No one deserves cancer, so I have dedicated my career to conducting clinical trials to someday find a cure.

What is the best part of your day?

The best part of my day is when a patient is in remission because of a treatment that we gave to them. The tears of joy and the smile on their face when they hear that word is why I fight every day for these people.

How do you express your personal style at work when you essentially wear a uniform?

Even though I have to wear hospital-issued scrubs, I like to express my personal style with a fun pair of comfortable shoes. The brighter the color the better!

How long have you been in the profession?

I started as an aide in 2001 and worked as an aide for 6 years. Then I worked as an LPN for 3 years, and now I’ve worked as an RN for 8 years.

Do you specialize in a particular area of nursing? Why did you pick this specialty?

I work in the ICU, and love the intensity and amount of attention it takes to work in the ICU.

What inspires you in your career?

I love seeing people on possibly their worst day, and helping them make it back to their best!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to do everything outdoors. Run, fish, camp, surf, bike, climb, and anything with a ball.
